What is Azahar Emulator?

Azahar emulator is a free, open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator that runs 3DS games on modern devices. It was created in late 2024 after Citra, the original 3DS emulator, was shut down following legal action from Nintendo. Two developer teams had each built improved Citra forks — PabloMK7’s fork focused on performance and online multiplayer, while Lime3DS focused on stability and better platform support. Rather than compete, both teams merged into one project called Azahar.

The name Azahar is the Spanish and Arabic word for orange blossom a nod to Citra’s orange logo and Lime3DS’s lime. The goal of the project is to become the definitive platform for Nintendo 3DS emulation going forward.

Azahar is available on every major platform. On Android it has been downloaded over 870,000 times. On PC it is the most recommended 3DS emulator by the emulation community in 2026. It supports online multiplayer, Amiibo, high resolution rendering up to 5x native, Vulkan and OpenGL graphics, save states, cheat codes, custom textures, and more.

What is New in Azahar 2125 Latest Version Features

Azahar 2125.0.1 is the biggest update since the emulator launched. Here is what changed:

New Feature (v2125)What It Means For You
RetroArch / libretro corePlay 3DS games through RetroArch on Windows, Android, Mac, iOS, and tvOS
Vulkan shader disk cache (.vkch)Zero stutter after first playthrough shaders saved forever
Vanilla native file I/OHOME menu boots in under 5 seconds instead of 30-45 seconds
Integer scaling optionPixel-perfect display at exact multiples no blurring
Layouts to Cycle settingChoose exactly which screen layouts to cycle with one hotkey
Re-added texture filtering (Vulkan)Smoother textures on Vulkan renderer was removed in 2124, now fixed and stable
Download Play (HLE only)Download Play works without needing DLP LLE module
Auto-Map Controller (Android)One-tap button mapping no manual setup needed

The Vulkan shader cache is one of the most important improvements for daily users. Shaders are compiled once on your first play session and saved permanently. Every time you launch the game after that, they load instantly from the cache. The stuttering that many emulator users experience the first time they play a game is now a one-time event, not something that happens every session.

The Vanilla Android build’s native file I/O change is equally significant for mobile users. Game loading times dropped from 30 to 45 seconds down to under 5 seconds for the HOME menu. This was not possible on the Google Play Store build due to Google’s app policies, so the performance gap between the two Android versions is now notable.

Azahar Emulator System Requirements

PC (Windows / Mac / Linux)Android
OSWindows 10 64-bit / macOS 13.4+ / LinuxAndroid 10+
CPUx86-64 or ARM64, Passmark 1800+ (SSE4.2 on x86)Snapdragon 835 or better
GPUOpenGL 4.3 or Vulkan 1.1OpenGL ES 3.2 or Vulkan 1.1
RAM2 GB minimum — 4 GB recommended2 GB minimum — 4 GB recommended

For Android, a Snapdragon 700 series processor or better will give smooth gameplay at 2x internal resolution for most games. The minimum Snapdragon 835 can run most games at 1x resolution. Devices with Mali GPUs work with Azahar but may get better performance with Citra MMJ on some specific chipsets — see our comparison section below.

For PC, single-core CPU performance matters more than core count because 3DS emulation is primarily single-threaded. A CPU with a Passmark single-core score above 2500 will run nearly all games at full speed.

How to Use Azahar Emulator Quick Setup Guide

Step 1 — Install Azahar

Download Azahar for your platform from the table above. On Windows, run the MSYS2 installer and follow the prompts. On Android, install from the Play Store or manually install the Vanilla APK file. On Mac, download the universal build, open the .zip, and drag Azahar to your Applications folder.

Step 2 — Prepare Your Game Files

Azahar works with .cci, .cia, .cxi, and .zcci game files. If you have .3ds files from Citra, rename the file extension from .3ds to .cci this is all most unencrypted files need. For encrypted .3ds files, you first need to decrypt them using GodMode9 on a modified 3DS. Do not use .zip or .7z compressed files extract them first.

To save storage space, Azahar can compress your .cci games to .zcci format which saves roughly 50% of file size. On PC, go to Tools then Compress ROM File. On Android, long press a game in your library and select Compress.

Step 3 — Add Your Games to Azahar

On PC, open Azahar, double-click in the main window, and navigate to your game folder. On Android, tap Get Started during first setup or go to Settings to add a game directory later. Azahar will scan the folder and show all your games in the library.

Step 4 — Configure Settings

For most games, default settings work well. For graphics, choose between Vulkan and OpenGL. Vulkan is faster on most modern hardware and now includes a full shader cache in v2125. OpenGL is better for older hardware or games with known Vulkan issues like Fire Emblem Awakening’s text rendering. Set internal resolution to 3x on PC and 2x on Android as a starting point, then adjust based on performance. For detailed settings, see our guide: Best Citra Emulator Settings — all settings apply to Azahar.

Step 5 — Transfer Saves from Citra or Lime3DS

If you used Citra or Lime3DS before, your saves transfer automatically. Go to File then Open Azahar Folder. You will see cheats, load, and sdmc folders. Replace them with your backed-up folders from your old emulator. Close and reopen Azahar and all your save data will be there.

Azahar Emulator Features

Online Multiplayer

Azahar supports online multiplayer for any 3DS game that has local wireless functionality. You can host or join rooms and play with Azahar users worldwide. Popular games for online play include Mario Kart 7, Pokemon X and Y for trading and battles, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf using the Nimbus plugin, which is now fully supported in version 2125.

Amiibo Support

Azahar supports virtual Amiibo scanning without needing the physical NFC toys. Use Amiibo in games like The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, and any other Amiibo-compatible 3DS title. This was never supported in the original Citra.

Artic Base — Play Without Dumping Games

Artic Base lets you stream games directly from your real Nintendo 3DS to Azahar over your home Wi-Fi. Install the Artic Base Server app on your 3DS via Luma3DS 13.1.1 or newer, open a game on your 3DS, connect from Azahar, and the game streams to your PC or phone at high resolution. Your 3DS handles decryption and authentication. This is the most legal way to play your owned games on Azahar without needing to dump them.

RetroArch Core — Now on iOS and tvOS

As of version 2125, Azahar is available as a RetroArch libretro core. This means you can play 3DS games through RetroArch on Windows, Linux, Android, macOS, iOS, and tvOS. Note that iOS and tvOS have JIT compilation disabled due to App Store restrictions, which reduces performance on older Apple devices. Recent iPhone and iPad models should still run most games acceptably.

High Resolution Graphics

Azahar renders 3DS games at up to 5x native resolution and beyond, making them look significantly sharper than on the original hardware. At 3x resolution on a mid-range PC, the difference compared to the original 3DS screen is dramatic. The new Integer Scaling option added in v2125 ensures pixel-perfect rendering at exact multiples with no blurring or interpolation artifacts.

Custom GPU Drivers on Android

Azahar Android supports custom Turnip GPU drivers for Snapdragon-based devices. These custom drivers can fix graphical glitches in specific games — for example the Froakie rendering bug in Pokemon X and Y and improve overall performance. Install them through Settings then GPU Driver Manager on Android.

ROM Compression Save 50% Storage

Azahar can compress your .cci game files to .zcci format, cutting file sizes roughly in half without any loss in performance or compatibility. A game library that takes 100 GB in .cci format can shrink to around 50 GB in .zcci. Compression runs directly inside Azahar with no extra tools needed.

Azahar vs Citra MMJ Which Should You Use on Android?

Both Azahar and Citra MMJ are popular choices for Android 3DS emulation. Here is a clear comparison for 2026:

FeatureAzahar (v2125)Citra MMJ
Still getting updatesYes — active 2026No — abandoned
Online multiplayerYesNo
Amiibo supportYesNo
Vulkan shader cacheYes (.vkch)No
RetroArch / iOS supportYes (v2125)No
Android load speedUnder 5 sec (Vanilla)Slower
.3ds file supportRename to .cciYes directly
Android 9 supportNo (Android 10+)Yes
Mali GPU devicesGoodSometimes better
Snapdragon devicesExcellent + custom driversGood

For most Android users in 2026, Azahar is the better choice. It is the only one still being developed and its feature set online multiplayer, Amiibo, Vulkan shader cache, custom drivers is far ahead of Citra MMJ. The Vanilla build’s loading speed improvement alone makes it significantly better for everyday use.

The one exception is older devices. If your phone runs Android 9 or has a Mali GPU that struggles with Azahar, Citra MMJ is a valid fallback. You can download Citra MMJ from our dedicated page: Citra MMJ Download for Android.

Is Azahar Emulator Safe and Legal?

Yes, Azahar is completely safe. It is open-source software hosted on GitHub under the GPL-2.0 license. The full source code is publicly available and reviewed by developers worldwide. There are no viruses, malware, ads, or tracking. Always download from the official sources: azahar-emu.org or the GitHub releases page at github.com/azahar-emu/azahar/releases. Avoid third-party APK sites which may bundle modified versions with unwanted software.

Emulators are legal in most countries. Azahar the software is legal. The developers take a deliberately cautious approach to stay legally safe they do not support encrypted game files by default, do not provide game download tools, and have even obtained written permission from some game developers directly. This is why Azahar has been able to operate openly where other emulators have faced legal trouble.

What matters legally is your game files. You should only use game files from games you legally own. Azahar itself provides no game files and has no way to obtain games illegally.

Azahar vs Citra — Key Differences

Citra was the original Nintendo 3DS emulator and was shut down in early 2024 after Nintendo’s legal action. Azahar is its direct successor. If you used Citra before, here is what changes when you switch:

  • Online multiplayer: Citra never had it. Azahar does. You can play Mario Kart 7 or Pokemon online with other Azahar users worldwide.
  • Amiibo support: Not in Citra. Fully supported in Azahar.
  • Active updates: Citra is permanently frozen. Azahar just released version 2125 with major new features.
  • Game compatibility: Both started at the same level but Azahar has improved it continuously. Games that had bugs in Citra may already be fixed in Azahar.
  • File formats: Citra used .3ds files. Azahar uses .cci files. Renaming .3ds to .cci works for most unencrypted games.
  • Save files: Transfer automatically. No manual steps needed.

What is AzaharPlus?

AzaharPlus is an unofficial fork of Azahar that adds two extra features the main Azahar project does not have. First, it supports all game file formats including .3ds so if you have a large collection of .3ds files and do not want to rename them to .cci, AzaharPlus handles them directly. Second, it can download system files from official Nintendo servers without needing a physical 3DS console.

AzaharPlus updates at the same pace as Azahar and shares the same compatibility list. Everything that works in Azahar works in AzaharPlus. It is a good option specifically for users with .3ds file collections or those who cannot get system files from a real 3DS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Azahar emulator?

Azahar is a free, open-source Nintendo 3DS emulator. It was created from the merger of two Citra forks PabloMK7’s fork and Lime3DS — after the original Citra emulator was shut down in 2024. It is the main platform for Nintendo 3DS emulation development in 2026 and supports Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and now iOS through RetroArch

Is Azahar emulator free?

Yes. Azahar is completely free with no paid features, subscriptions, or premium tiers. It is open-source under the GPL-2.0 license. Download it from azahar-emu.org at no cost.

Does Azahar emulator work on Android?

Yes. Azahar has a dedicated Android version on the Google Play Store and as a direct APK download. It requires Android 10 or higher and a Snapdragon 835 processor or better. It has been downloaded over 870,000 times on Android. For older Android devices running Android 9, use the last compatible version 2123.4.1 or switch to Citra MMJ.

Can I use .3ds files with Azahar?

Azahar does not support encrypted .3ds files by default. For unencrypted .3ds files, rename the extension to .cci that is the only change needed and the file will work immediately. For encrypted files, decrypt them with GodMode9 on a modified 3DS first. If you prefer to use .3ds files directly without renaming, use AzaharPlus instead.

What happened to Lime3DS?

Lime3DS was merged into Azahar in late 2024. The Lime3DS developers combined their project with PabloMK7’s Citra fork to create Azahar. Lime3DS no longer exists as a separate project and will never receive updates. Azahar is the continuation. Your Lime3DS save files transfer to Azahar automatically.

Is Azahar emulator available for iPhone / iOS?

As of version 2125, Azahar is available for iOS and tvOS through a RetroArch libretro core. Performance may be reduced on older iPhones because iOS restricts JIT compilation. A standalone Azahar app for the App Store is not currently planned. For the best experience on Apple devices, use Azahar on Mac through the standard desktop download.

What is the difference between Azahar Vanilla and Play Store?

Both are the same emulator. The Vanilla build uses fully native file I/O which makes game loading dramatically faster the HOME menu loads in under 5 seconds versus 30 to 45 seconds on the Play Store build. This is because Google Play restricts certain file access methods. The Vanilla build requires manual APK installation and does not update automatically. Use Play Store for convenience, Vanilla for performance.

Does Azahar support online play?

Yes. Azahar supports online multiplayer for 3DS games with local wireless functionality. You can host or join public rooms to play with other users. This includes Mario Kart 7, Pokemon games, Super Smash Bros., and Animal Crossing: New Leaf with the Nimbus plugin. The original Citra never had online multiplayer.

How do I fix .3ds files not working in Azahar?

Simply rename the file extension from .3ds to .cci. Most unencrypted files work immediately after this rename with no other changes. If renaming does not work, the file is encrypted and needs to be decrypted first using GodMode9 on a modified 3DS. Alternatively, install AzaharPlus which supports .3ds files directly.
